World First at Subway: We Tried the New Laugenbrot
Subway Switzerland is rolling out a genuine world first: Laugenbrot! Obviously I had to try this immediately, so I zoomed straight over to the nearest branch. Sitting in the display case, the Laugenbrot already looks super promising - baked to a lovely golden brown, with that typical shiny crust and the characteristic slashes you know from a classic Laugenstange. The smell of freshly baked pretzel bread mixing with the usual Subway counter scent is quite the intriguing combo.
The prep works just like always at Subway: the Laugenbrot gets sliced open and then topped however you like. I went for Chicken, added some cheese, and then helped myself at the veggie counter - lettuce, cucumber, yellow, red and green pepper strips, and red onions. A bit of sauce on top to finish it off, and my Lauge-Sub was ready to go.
First bite: the Laugenbrot genuinely brings its own character to the sandwich. The crust is nice and firm with a slight saltiness, just like you'd expect from a good Laugenstange, while the inside is pleasantly soft and a bit dense. Combined with the juicy chicken, the crunchy veggies and the melted cheese, you get an interesting flavor combo that definitely tastes different from Subway's classic white or whole wheat bread.
My verdict: if you're a fan of pretzel-style bread, this is definitely worth trying. It brings a breath of fresh air to the familiar sandwich lineup and mixes things up nicely. Whether it'll become your new favorite bread is something everyone has to figure out for themselves, but as a fan of unusual fast-food new releases, I was pleasantly surprised. Switzerland, well done!
